D23 is the ultimate Disney fan event held every two years. It provides us the opportunity to look into the future of the brand for the first time. The 2022 edition of the event was expected to be even more special as Disney is already looking ahead to celebrate its 100th anniversary. But it seems the entertainment giant is stuck in a rut. The future it projected is mostly buried in the past. What we had is all about remakes, sequel or spin-offs and nothing new and original as such. We expect Disney to keep breaking newer grounds leaving the past far behind.
D23 2022 Reviews: The Future Of Disney Parks Is Too Nebulous
With no new ideas or story lines the excitement takes a backseat for the Disney park fans as well. Disney Imagineers such as Chris Beatty and Jennifer Lee shared future ideas for Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom. But their expert visions are unclear and underwhelming.
True that D’ Amaro is good in presenting his new announcements but the parks future is still unclear at best. Why the projects are taking so long. For example it takes about 6 years to roll out the Tron attraction whereas Magic Kingdom is built in just 18 months. Josh D’Amaro Chairman of Walt Disney World Parks, announced the return of the fan – favorite purple dragon – Figment meet and greet experience at Epcot. But it may take another year or so to roll out. Also fans may have to wait until the end of 2024 to experience the “Princess and the Frog”, which is not a new attraction but actually a re-theme of Splash Mountain. Also new announcements such as “Journey of Water” inspired by the Disney movie Moana may not even roll out until the end of 2023.
D23 Disney Movies – Its All About Remakes, Sequel and Spinoffs
The future of Disney movies is way away from anything original. All that we have is either a remake of Disney animated classics or a sequel or spin-off of an original movie or a combination of the two such as Mufasa: The Lion King. The remakes will be based on classic animated films such as Peter Pan and Wendy, Snow White and The Little Mermaid.
The sequels or spinoffs are based on original movies such as Hocus Pocus 2 and Disenchanted. Also there was new footage from their new movie Haunted Mansion inspired from Disney Park attraction. The shoutouts from Marvel are also about sequels and spinoffs. There will be more of Ant-Man, Black Panther and Captain Marvel films in the future, while the new movie “Wish” – the Disney Studios is offering for the holiday season in 2023 had been referred as a brand new, original movie, but traces of the past still remain to be found. Lucasfilm was silent about any new movie, but hope that they come out with something new and original in the near future. Fingers crossed!
When it comes to Disney TV and streaming the presentations are similar to the movies. Disney is reluctant to work on something new. The company is more interested in re-building its tried and available concepts and properties. And with the recent comments from Bob Chapeck Chief Officer at Disney Parks that Disney is only interested in travelers that are going to be spending more than just a day have fuelled the fire of locals as well as annual pass holders not to return to their theme parks. We shall see in the coming year what Disney has up its sleeve.
